How Gen-3 Alpha rates across core capability dimensions, with the task-level evidence behind each rating.
Good text adherence; improved in Gen-4 successor.
Solid consistency within a clip; Gen-4 series improved on long-form coherence.
Smooth motion; good physics for the generation.
No native audio generation in Gen-3 Alpha.
Basic camera control through prompts.
Up to 10 seconds per generation.
1280×768 or 768×1280; no 1080p native output.
Cloud-hosted API with typical generation times in the 30–90s range for 10-second clips. No special speed guarantee. Gen-4 Turbo (the successor) is faster; Gen-3 Alpha is the baseline prior-gen reference point.
T2V and I2V only via Runway API. Act-One (reference-based actor animation) was a consumer product feature, not an exposed API parameter.
Operator guidance
Gen-3 Alpha is the prior-generation Runway model. In most cases, Gen-4 Turbo offers better quality at a lower credit cost (5 vs 10 credits/second). Choose Gen-3 Alpha only if existing integrations require the gen_3a API endpoint, or for historical price comparison. Note: Gen-3 Alpha Turbo (gen_3a_turbo) is being sunset July 30 2026.
Use cases
- Cost comparison baseline against Gen-4 series
- Workflows that cannot upgrade from Gen-3 due to integration constraints
Limitations
- Prior-generation model; Gen-4 series offers better quality at lower cost
- No native audio generation
- Pricing confidence: estimated from plan math (no standalone credit purchase price)
- Gen-3 Alpha Turbo variant being deprecated July 2026
